Jawahn Thompson asked:

Broadband is the name given to high speed Internet connection, which is becoming the preferred way to surf the Web. Dial-Up is quickly becoming a thing of the past, but as more and more people look towards broadband technology to improve their Internet experiences, the question of what service to get pops of often. For that reason, it’s important to know just what your broadband options are, so that you can make an informed decision on how to assimilate high-speed Internet access into your home and your life. There are three major broadband options currently available: Cable, DSL, and Satellite. In addition to these, there are some future broadband options that are soon to emerge, and they’re worth keeping your eye on.

Let’s start by talking about cable, which is used by more people than any of the other broadband options that are currently available. This is because, for the most part, cable is cheaper, faster, and more reliable than the other services that are available. After all, it is much cheaper to hook up a cable to your computer than to rely on expensive satellite networks or any wireless equipment. There are some problems with Cable, though. Since you have to share a bandwidth with your neighbors, if the company you choose fails to keep up the bandwidth in your area, the speed of your Internet is likely to fall.

Earthlink is one of the most popular providers of cable broadband. For only $41.95 a month, you’ll have fast Internet access throughout your home, and Earthlink does not have any set up or equipment fees. You only have to play for the service you receive. Another major cable Broadband competitor is Cablevision. While it has a slightly cheaper monthly rate, you are responsible for paying for the modem, which costs about $129.95. This service claims to be faster than Earthlink, but that all depends on the bandwidth available, as Earthlink tends to have more.

DSL is quickly growing in popularity and is the closest rival to cable connections these days. By choosing a company that offers DSL, you won’t have to share bandwidth with your neighbors. That means that your Internet speed will remain constant. If you are a business owner, DSL companies tend to have more options for you, whereas other services cater more towards the home. Many DSL companies have gone out of business, however, so make sure you find a reputable one that will preferably offer free installation, since installing DSL on your own is difficult.

Earthlink, the same company that offers cable broadband, also offers DSL in over 90 markets nationwide. It costs $49.95 a month, and once again offers no extra fees for setup or equipment. With a decent download and upload speed, it stands up to its competitors in price and quality. Another major DSL competitor is MSN Broadband, which is cheaper per month by ten dollars. However, there is a one-time fee of $99 for activation. A “Gold” plan is also offered that costs the same as Earthlink and offers an even faster connection. The activation fee still applies.

Finally, we reach the third option that’s widely available: Satellite. This doesn’t have nearly as many subscribers as cable or DSL, though it hasn’t been available as long. The great thing about getting a satellite connection is that it is offered everywhere, so if you live in an area that cable or DSL isn’t offered in, you can still have fast Internet access with a satellite provider. Also, if you already have satellite television, you should check with your provider to see if they offer Internet access as well. More often than not, you can get a great offer by purchasing both services from the same company. The satellite option offers excellent service, but it the most expensive option of the major three. Your service can also be affected by the weather, just like your satellite television.

As usual, Earthlink offers satellite broadband service for only $69.95 per month. The hardware to get everything going is very pricey, costing $399. You’re also going to have to pay for installation and a modem. After all these costs are added together, the whole system starts to get pretty expensive. However, if you’re willing to shell out the cash for it, you’ll get some of the fastest speeds available from any broadband option today.

Now that you’ve gotten a taste for the three major broadband options, let’s goes over the emerging options that are slowly becoming available, just so you can get a taste of the future of broadband. The first is power line broadband, which uses electric utility lines to transfer data. This technology is still in the testing phases, but companies in Cincinnati and Manassas, Va are offering broadband services such as this, while North Carolina and Washington, D.C. are testing the technology. This broadband option brings Internet access straight into people’s home through their wall sockets. All you’ll have to do is plug in and start surfing. Some companies can’t get past power transformers, though, and offer the service through a wireless modem.

Many phone companies have started offering their own broadband wireless service only a couple years ago. They’re now starting to become very popular, though they tend to cost more than DSL or cable options. While this may not appeal to homes, people on the go will be the most likely to take advantage of the service.

So there you have it, all the broadband options available to you today. If you’re looking for faster Internet service and quicker downloads, look into getting set up with one of the options discussed here. This is especially true if you’re still dealing with dial-up. Cable and DSL are most certainly the way most people will want to go today, though satellite coverage has an appeal to many people, especially to those households and businesses that operate outside of DSL or cable company’s areas. So choose the option that’s right for you, and start enjoying faster Internet access.

Paul Lucas asked:

TalkTalk started a mini-revolution in the broadband market earlier this year when it launched its TalkTalk 3 and TalkTalk 3 International packages, with the unique marketing slogan of ‘free broadband’. Unsurprisingly, consumers reacted in their thousands despite warnings from industry experts that the take-up could be more than TalkTalk could handle.Still, all good things come to those who wait… and wait… and wait. According to the moneysupermarket.com forums, TalkTalk ‘talk rubbish’. Consumer frustration at the company’s ever-expanding waiting list and the lack of quality in its service has even led one user to brand the company as ‘an unprofessional bunch of amateurs’.TalkTalk aren’t alone though. To the company’s credit it predicted that the response to its offer could be overwhelming, and it sparked a price war within the industry. Orange, BT, Sky, Pipex, AOL and Tiscali are just a handful of the names who have since improved their deals or entered the market with completely new offers such as BT’s Total Broadband package that could potentially combine broadband, home phone and television services. Both BT and Sky have also met with consumer criticism. BT was branded as having ‘the worst consumer service ever’ while a thread offering views on the Sky broadband service, and generally criticising the product, has received more than 21,000 views. It would appear that the providers are sacrificing quality for quantity. In their desperate attempt to capitalise on the market while it’s hot (and before another company beats them to it) they are throwing out hot offers before they have the services in place to deal with the uptake. So what is the solution? Online aggregators such as the broadband comparison tool at moneysupermarket.com are giving companies the push they need to drop prices as they compete to appear at the top of best buy tables. These comparators can also introduce the consumer to a number of lesser-known names who can offer quality service due to fewer pressures than their rivals. With the majority of companies using BT phone lines the quality of the connection is likely to be just as high, the prices competitive but with shorter waiting times and a higher staff-consumer ratio. Names like Be, Biscit and EHF have competitive packages that are well worth considering on their growing networks. The key with any broadband product is to look beyond the price. Consider the download speeds and capacity, the set-up fee and the quality of the consumer service. Take a full search of the market and make sure you’re not sucked in by advertising slogans.Broadband providers should start as they mean to go on, unlimited downloads and fast speeds are useless without broadband providers servicing the needs of their customers adequately.

Mei Galang asked:

These days, it is common for a household to own more than one computer, gaming consoles or laptops thus having a broadband router have become a basic necessity.

Owning a broadband router will allow more than one device within a household to share files and an Internet connection. The one time price they have to pay for it is worth it because it can save them a lot of money from separate Internet services that they will avail.

Routers employ a Network Address Translation (NAT), that lets all the computers in one household to share the Internet connection. By installing one broadband router, you can surf the Internet using your personal computer while your brother send an email using his laptop. Aside from that, your broadband router can create another firewall because NAT can also act as an extra protection while you’re online. A firewall hides your device’s unique IP address, simply put this is an additional safety method to protect you from hackers, people who wants to exploit your system or other online threats.

A broadband router is an investment, it’s cost will depend on its features, specifications and brand. A basic and simple broadband router can get the job done for a connection in your household. The two types are ADSL Modem Routers for ADSL broadband subscribers and Cable Routers for Cable broadband subscribers but both person the same function they only . You have to consider getting a router with the additional features if your house is more than one storey since some don’t work between floors. Some routers are wireless and some needs wire connection. Before deciding to purchase one, evaluate your computer usage and house structure. You can also ask the sales associates opinion so that you can get the proper router that will provide you just that.

These routers are available on local electronic shops and online. It’s practical to check out the products online so that you can research for their features, specifications, reviews and even testimonials from people who have bought the same product. Online or offline, sales associates can help you choose the best broadband router but be wise enough to spot if he’s giving an expert opinion or up-sale you. Being resourceful pays because you can find the broadband router that fits your needs and your budget.

Liam G asked:

A survey, conducted by JD Power, a market research firm has revealed some pretty disappointing figures with regards to customers and ISP relations.

The survey, currently in its 3rd year has found that the number of calls regarding customers complaining about their broadband providers now outnumber the amount of service-related calls, with 52% to 48% respectively.

The survey has looked at the UKs leading eight broadband providers and scored them on various important aspects, such as; performance, reliability, customer service and technical support.

The total score was 1,000 and Tiscali scored the highest with 668, and BT came in with the lowest at 626.

Some of the major problem areas the survey uncovered where regarding performance, reliability and customer satisfaction levels.

It found that on average, customers had to wait 17 minutes before they got to speak to a member of their ISPs technical help team. Moreover, overall performance, reliability and average customer satisfaction figures where down from last years figures.

Although the average broadband connection speed has risen from 3.5Mbps in 2006 to 4.8Mbps this year, it would seems that one of the UK consumers main annoyance is to do with the actual speed they receive being considerably less than what ISPs advertise.

According to JD Power’s director of service industries, “Last year broadband was still a novelty and people were wowed by how much faster it was than dial-up,” but, “This year everyone expects it to be fast and get angrier when it doesn’t work.”

It’s important to note though, that the actual broadband speed a consumer will experience depends heavily on the distance they are from their nearest BT exchange, and the quality of their line.

Kristen asked:

The importance of VoIP Internet broadband phone service cannot be overemphasized. As many of us are aware, in Internet broadband phone service, “broadband” connections are used to facilitate the transfer of voice signals over IP networks.

Voice over IP, or IP telephony as it is commonly called, is quite fascinating. This technology changes voice signals to digital data packets before transferring them over IP networks to different destinations. At the receiver’s end, the digital data packets get changed into voice signals. For ordinary users and subscribers to VoIP phone services, there is nothing amiss; calling via VoIP would seem quite like making calls using the traditional phone networks.

Setting up of a VoIP internet phone service does not require much. The broadband providers do their bit in facilitating the entire process. In many instances, users of broadband phone services are provided with IP phones that can be directly connected to a router or a modem. Potential users can also use the analogue telephone adapter (ATA); this equipment is connected to a router or a modem. In this way, even normal phones can be used to make low cost international calls. A lot of options are available in the market that makes the entire experience an enjoyable one. And the joy that an user would feel while making low costs calls to almost anywhere in the world using this service has to be experienced to be believed.

The merits of subscribing to the services of broadband providers are many. An user is able to achieve significant efficiencies in call rates, for instance. Moreover, that extra bit is always a part of many of the broadband phone services and plans. This could include features such as call waiting, voice mail, caller ID. No extra money is charged from the customer for these specialized services.

However, like with all good things, there are certain hiccups while using broadband internet services. By very definition, these services are dependent on a ‘high speed’ broadband internet connection. This means that phone services are adversely affected, when there is some problem with internet connectivity. Moreover, there are certain reliability and security issues that need to be taken care of and efforts are on at several levels to address all these problems.

In the mean time, users can go ahead and use the services to ‘connect’ with people who matter in a cost efficient manner. The telephone bills are significantly less, when the costs of making phone calls using VoIP are compared to the costs of doing the same through the traditional phone systems. Sometimes, the reduction is as much as 60 per cent.

However, to get all the benefits, selection of broadband providers become very important. In this context, it can be said that several plans and programs are available from various providers of repute. One could get to know more about these deals; an that too from the comfort of one’s homes or workstations; by browsing online through the e-portals on which many of these deals are being showcased.

However, the terms and conditions should be properly understood before a person subscribes to any such program. Special care must be taken to understand the conditions that could sometimes be given in fine print. Moreover, the merits and the drawbacks of the different plans have to be assessed viz-a-viz the specific needs and requirements of different categories of users.

And the great news is that switching from a traditional service provider to VoIP broadband phone service is not at all difficult. Some broadband providers offer free trial of their services before a user makes the final purchase decision. This way he or she gets a feel of making calls through the Internet – without committing to it all the way.

Steve Wilson asked:

The internet has become a very essential part in our day to day life. We can do a lot of works with the help of internet and we need not to go out. But to operate internet you have to avail the services of broadband suppliers. They offer you several best and the cheapest broadband packages. The packages give you more benefits with high-speed internet. You can avail them that too at cheapest cost. Most people look at the base line cost of broadband Internet when deciding the cost in opposition to the reimbursements of broadband internet service. Yes, Cost is a big factor in choosing the right provider, but there are also several packages which could be saving you even more money on your broadband internet service. Packages can now include several different discounts such as, free months, wireless routers, memory cards, free minutes and cheap calls, anti virus and spam software, line rental, installation, no minimum contract periods. There are just several examples of what broadband providers, offer for your service. It should be fairly clear to most people that faster surfing and downloads are only the very basic of benefits to broadband users. Firstly many internet users switched to a broadband deal after being enticed by faster speeds and packages were generally expensive. Now that the broadband market has become more crowded the range of deals, speed and download offers have improved and most importantly prices have come down. If you are one of the many UK broadband customers who have been with the same provider for many years now is the time to review the situation and see if you can find a better or cheaper deal with another broadband supplier. The number of operators and the range of packages have increased immensely. All these options make it more difficult to choose the right deal but it also creates the opportunity to get far more from your broadband provider. By taking benefit of online broadband comparison services you can quickly compare a huge range of broadband packages to find the deals that match your requirements be it based on download limits, speeds bundle options or just looking for the cheapest basic package.

Matt Sharp asked:

You can probably tell from the title what I’m getting at. In the fashion world, when someone says something is the new black, it’s taken to mean ‘it’s the next, new in-thing.’ The same can be said of mobile broadband, with one notable difference. Mobile broadband isn’t just a fad, and really IS changing the world!

Just like a natural, ecological system, the internet evolves, and crucially, how we access it evolves as well. Cast your mind back to the early days, when we were all connected to the net with dialup (and if you can’t remember dialup, I envy you!). Believe me, it was no fun trying to use an internet connection that was slow enough to be overtaken by an asthmatic snail. Images would take ages to load, and as for watching Youtube videos… forget about it!

Oh what a breath of fresh air it was when broadband was unleashed on the world! At last there was a system that gave us decent speeds to view the web at. Broadband itself evolved, and WiFi came on the scene, using wireless routers and WiFi hot spots to make the internet ‘kind of mobile, as long as you didn’t wander off too far from the wireless router’.

The next big advance, surprisingly enough, came from the world of mobile phones, with the technology known as 3G, a much faster, higher bandwidth way of accessing data on the move. That, too, evolved into what’s known as HSDPA (that’s High Speed Downlink Packet Access, for the techno-lovers out there). And that, right there, is where we start our story of mobile broadband, because it’s HSDPA that makes it all possible.

You see, mobile broadband is one of those technologies that does exactly what it says on the tin. It’s broadband internet access, and you can use it while you’re on the move, while you’re mobile. There are several things that make it a winning technology, but they can be boiled down to a couple of key facts. First, it’s proper broadband, giving you speeds up to, currently, 7.2Mbps, and in future, up to 14.4Mbps. Secondly, it’s truly mobile, as it uses cell towers used by mobile phones. Which means no more hunting around to find a WiFi hot spot! And finally, it’s easy to set up, because the setup procedure just involves plugging the USB Modem in. And that’s it. Basically, think of it this way: when you compare mobile phones to broadband, then they’ll always come out second fiddle, next to a dedicated computer. But compare mobile broadband to your home connection, and it’s just possible it might even be better what you have at home!

Virgil Baptiste asked:

What is Broadband
Broadband can be described as a way to share information or any chunks of data that lies on the vast network known as the internet. The term ‘Broadband’ explains the method that is used in conjunction with this data in order for it to be sent and retrieved. In short and easy terms, you could explain broadband by saying that it was the prime successor of dialup modems. During the dawn of the internet, where houses were beginning to get connected using first-generation modems, these little box would allow a transfer that varied between a couple of kilobytes per second to around fifty kilobytes per second; with broadband, these transfers can vary from hundreds of kilobytes per second to literally thousands of kilobytes per second. Seeing the net amelioration in data transfer, it was quite comprehensible that many companies wanted to get control over this new technology. No single company was able to grab the title of ‘monopoly,’ thus every one of them were able to keep on existing (which could not have beenpossible through a monopoly) and altogether, we can classify this group of companies as the Broadband Marketplace.
What does the Broadband Marketplace do?
An easy way to define a Broadband Marketplace is to think of it as a giant mall where you can go shop for the broadband distributor of your choice, instead of having to deal with a single company that controls all of the market. A very good point about having a group of providers instead of a single entity is the resulting war that will ensue between them. Providers will obviously try to get as many subscribers as possible, and to do so, they will have to attract you in any means necessary; this resulting feud means that you can look around for rebates, bonus, referral programs and many innovative market stunts that they will offer, all will be in the customers advantage. Below, you will see some points that tackle this so-called marketplace, as well as tell you what you should be looking for aside from the cheapest provider available.
Which Broadband Provider is the best?
Sometime, we look at similar products and we make our choice based solely on one aspect, the price. As far as it goes, selecting the cheapest service is a valid way to pick a provider, but it is probably not the best.
Connection Speed
When you are browsing through websites or downloading content, data packets are transferred from your computer to the location of those packets. The transfer rate should vary from 256 kilobytes per second to 1.5 megabytes per second and the higher the number is, the better it is for you (while taking in consideration that 1.5Megs is the highest of the two, as it is close to 1500 kilobytes per second.) As well, some Broadband provider may have a clause in which they reinforce a cap or transfer limit in which you cannot download more than the said limit per month. Depending on your activities, you may ask tech-savvy friends if the imposed limit of a provider is enough for you.
Service
Just like every other service out there, your internet connection is bound to come face to face with trouble; when those time arise, you will undoubtedly have to call your provider’s customer service. Be sure that the provider that you select has a good reputation when it comes to customer service, as there’s nothing worst for you than having trouble with your line, and have someone on the tech support that is not being helpful to you.

Shirley Stevens asked:

It is astonishing that so few broadband providers seem to have noticed what an absolute turn-off their £15 an hour telephone technical support costs are to their customers; this in return for just getting a straightforward £6 a month broadband service going. Some bargain, you may well say. Telephone support at zero cost The popular broadband providers such as Be broadband and its sister company O2 Broadband, as well as Fasthosts, have for some time been offering completely free telephone support. Since the beginning of April this year, BT broadband has also introduced free telephone support to customers by making their six most frequently used chargeable numbers totally free. This means that instead of 92% of numbers, it is now 99%. Now that’s a whole lot better, isn’t it? BT’s managing director, Gavin Patterson, has calculated that broadband customers are losing out to the tune of as much as £70 million a year (yes, that’s right – 70 million quid!) with the inexcusably high prices they are being forced to pay for technical support. BT is justifiably feeling very proud of itself. Will free support mean higher prices? It does not seem likely, at this stage, that many other broadband providers will follow suit and this may not be such a bad thing overall. Free telephone support is likely to raise the price of broadband packages and means that you might be paying for something you are seldom likely to use. No use = no value, so why pay for something you may not need? As they often say, there is no such thing as a free lunch and with access to the Internet never being free, why should you have to pay for getting to the bottom of your broadband provider’s blunders on top of that cost? How much then is your broadband provider charging you for their technical expertise which, incidentally, you may never or seldom need (especially with the amount of help and support information you can now easily obtain online)? Before you buy, it is advisable to do some research on a broadband comparison site like ChooseISP.co.uk and also carefully check the small print so you know exactly what you are letting yourself in for. The devil is always in the detail! Something you need to watch out for A devious little ruse among some broadband providers is to throw in a free support line for the customer and cheekily advertise free support, but then to provide a technical support number charged at a premium rate. A useful hint if you are experiencing a problem with your service but are not in a desperate hurry, is to send off a letter by email or even snail-mail. This will solve the difficulty just as well, is a lot cheaper and you won’t have to listen to canned muzak whilst waiting… and waiting… for the next available consultant to help you.

James Dyson asked:

A standard modem’s job is to convert data from its digital form to analog form, which are then transferred over a phone line and reverse done while receiving data from the telephone line to your computer. By doing both modulating and demodulating the data signals, it is called to be a Modem.

A broadband modem is quite different from those of dial-up modems. You need it when you take a broadband service for the first time. Usually providers offer modem along with you package or may ask you to have a modem at extra cost. Anyhow, getting the modem from your broadband provider should be safe being supported by your provider and should work fine with the setup.

In case your provider does not offer a modem then you can get a modem of your choice. There are wide types of modem out there and it is good before to check with your provider for a suitable modem. If you are in preparation to set up a network to share your internet connection then you require a router modem.

Broadband modems are still limited to utilize analog/digital conversion. But most recent advanced modems are capable of modulating/demodulating hundreds of channels simultaneously. Also many broadband modems together include the firewall features and functionality of a router.

The propagation of cable broadband, along with ADSL, has steered well the broadband Internet access in the developed world. However, modem for a cable broadband much differs from an ADSL modem. Cable broadband primarily uses the unused bandwidth on a cable television network to deliver speeder broadband Internet access. A cable modem so is a different type of modem that is designed to carry on the data signals over network designed for cable television.

ADSL and Cable modems differ little by the way it works and both are superior alternatives to dial-up internet. Both offer a snappy pace to transfer data packets to the servers. But, there is wide different in bandwidth between ADSL and Cable internet. Speeds at which data are send and received vary between cable and of ADSL modems.

Cable modems mostly run at a speed of 3-6 Mbps in downstream and in upstream 0.3-0.4 Mbps. Comparing to Cable modem, DSL modem offers less speed and varies between service packages. Service quality also depends on your location from your local exchange. A dial-up modem can run at a speed of 56 Kbps. Irrespective of broadbands having their own advantages and disadvantages, modems take the central most part in it to provide you the high-speed internet.
